You will never achieve righteousness until you donate some of what you cherish. And whatever you give is certainly well known to Allah.

MSA 2024 Fundraising Appeal

AssalamuAlaikum Respected Students and Alumni/Community Members,

During the 2024/2025 academic year, the Muslim Students' Association at the University of Alberta has been working hard to provide high-quality events for Muslim and non-Muslim students on campus. This year, by the will of Allah, we will continue to deliver events focused on both da'wah and establishing brotherhood and sisterhood between Muslim students on campus, creating a strong and united community. Going beyond our campus community, our student-group has also been working hard to raise awareness and raise money for various humanitarian causes affecting our ummah around the world.

Islam Awareness Week

Alhamdulillah, between June 2023 and November 2024, we are thankful that together we have been able to raise over $105,000 for various humanitarian appeals. This includes relief for our local Edmonton community, to Palestine, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Morocco, Libya, and Sudan, as well as raising funds for Eid gifts for orphans and vulnerable children. With the new year approaching, we have various exciting projects just around the corner, including our annual Islam Awareness Week! To make these events possible, for the first time this academic year, we are launching an appeal to help raise funds for the MSA itself.

We are seeking 160 generous community members to donate a one-time $125 by January 10th, to help us reach our goal of $20,000.

You can donate by clicking the button below, or you can e-transfer us at msa@ualberta.ca!

Below, you can find the details for the initiatives we have planned this semester to better understand how the MSA will be using these funds.

Jumu'ah

Islam Awareness Week (IAW) is one of the MSA's largest and most costly initiatives. IAW is a week-long initiative dedicated to conveying the true message of Islam and its relevance to humanity in today's contemporary context to both non-Muslims and Muslims alike.

In 2024, by the grace of Allah SWT, we were able to organize the biggest Islam Awareness Week in recent years! We were joined by influential and engaging speakers from around the world, including The Sunnah Guy, Khaled Beydoun, Shaun King, and Shaykh Navaid Aziz, and organized da'wah booths, try-on hijab booths, public Quran recitations, lectures, speaker panels, a dinner, and more.

In 2025, we hope to build off of this momentum and once again invite hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and people from all walks of life to learn about Islam's universal and timeless message. We have even more exciting speakers and events in the works—more info coming soon!

Costs for this initiative include venue booking, advertisements, speaker travel and accommodation costs, honorariums, and da'wah materials, amongst other expenses.

Seerah Competition

Every Ramadan, the MSA works tirelessly on a daily basis to serve the Muslim community on campus. In Ramadan 1445/2024, we organized nine different community iftaars throughout the month, including one Grand Iftaar in the Telus International Centre. By the will of Allah, we were able to feed at least two hundred brothers and sisters in every community iftar! In addition, we also hosted a brothers’ potluck iftar, a sisters’ halaqa & iftar, and a brothers’ & sisters’ i’tikaaf night at Rahma Mosque. We were also happy to organize our annual Seerah Competition, which has become a signature MSA Ramadan event!

The MSA is also honoured to host taraweeh on campus every night of Ramadan, in the comfort of the HUB Prayer Space! The MSA’s taraweeh prayer is often the most convenient location for students who live on or around campus to pray their taraweeh, removing the need for late-night commutes and allowing students to have iftar and pray taraweeh in the same location.

In Ramadan 1446/2025, we hope to continue to serve Muslim students on campus with iftars, taraweeh, and other events! Our goal is to continue to increase the number of iftars we provide every Ramadan. With the permission of Allah, we hope that we will one day be able to provide iftars to students on every night of Ramadan!

Dawah Initiatives

In the past, we have been charged approximately $3000-$4000 to book gymnasiums that can accommodate the 500+ students and staff that attend our weekly Jumu'ah prayers on campus.

For almost two years, we have been advocating for the university to cover the cost of jumu’ah bookings. We have yet to be charged for Jumu'ah bookings this year, and we are optimistic that the University will cover the bookings, inshaAllah. We hope to be able to share good news with you soon regarding a permanent arrangement for free Jumu’ah bookings.

However, there are other costs associated with Jumu'ah besides bookings, such as new banners, microphones, speakers, receivers, batteries, carpet rolls, and carpet cleaning fees.

Regular Costs

The MSA's annual Seerah competition is a yearly initiative, taking place every Ramadan, that aims to encourage students to study the life of the most perfect man to walk the earth, the beloved of Allah, who was sent as a mercy to mankind (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and compete in a trivia-style competition against other seekers of knowledge.

Costs for the Seerah competition include a custom-made buzzer system, and a generous prize pool for winners and attendees. Last year, the MSA was happy to offer an expanded prize pool, offering prizes of up to $300 for the top 5 brothers and top 5 sisters! We look forward to running another successful Seerah Competition this year inshaAllah.

Regular Costs

The MSA is one of the only organizations in Edmonton that consistently executes weekly Dawah booths year-round. We seek to improve conveying the message of Islam to non-Muslims by training da'ees and making our tables more interactive through hijab try-on booths and prizes!

In the past year, our generous community’s donations have facilitated the purchase of additional pamphlets and translations of the Quran, the printing and distribution of da’wah posters around campus, and the organization of a special Ramadan iftar where non-Muslims were welcome to join their Muslim friends and learn about Islam.

Regular Costs

Throughout the semester, the MSA regularly hosts free or low-cost events with a limited budget. To better engage the community on campus, some of these events have small costs to the MSA (i.e. equipment, supplies, prizes, and free food for attendees). Some of the events/initiatives we have organized or are planning this year are listed below, majority of which are free of cost:

Al' Baqarah 2:265

And the example of those who donate their wealth, seeking Allah’s pleasure and believing the reward is certain, is that of a garden on a fertile hill: when heavy rain falls, it yields up twice its normal produce. If no heavy rain falls, a drizzle is sufficient. And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.
